Sports & Culture division

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! As well as studying, it’s important to discover and develop your talents. And to help you do this, Sports & Culture at TU Delft offers students the opportunity to purchase an inexpensive sports card and to take a range of creative courses. So you can keep fit and extend your boundaries while studying at TU Delft.

Sport

The Unit Sports offers 70 different sports and is the home base for 40 TU Delft sports associations.

You can play sports as a member of a sports association or as an individual. And the modern gym is open all day long. Sport try-out lessons are available free of charge during the first two weeks of the academic year, so you can come and find out what suits you best. And your sports card entitles you to great discounts, including  SnowWorld, De Uithof and Outdoor Valley.

Culture

The Unit Culture is home to five cultural associations and around 70 creative courses are given each semester. A culture subscription entitles you to use the unit’s rehearsal rooms and modern studios. An Open Evening is held at the beginning of every academic year where you can find the activity (or activities) that suits you best.

Events

Besides the standard courses, a range of extra activities are held each month, such as the free Friday Nights with bands and DJs, special events, films, workshops and interesting talks. So keep an eye on the S & C website and follow us on Facebook; there’s always something going on!

Sports café

The Sports Café is a meeting place where you can also enjoy something to eat and drink. There is an extensive menu with lunch dishes and an inexpensive, freshly prepared dish of the day. The Sports Café is a great place to meet up with your sport association and/or friends and also watch sports on the big screen.

KRASHNA

Krashna Musika is Delft’s Student Music society. Krashna Musika has a symphony orchestra, a large choir and a chamber music department. More than two hundred TU students play music and sing at Krashna Musika.
The orchestra rehearses every Monday evening from 19.30 to 22.30 in Room 232 at the unit Culture, led by Daan Admiraal.
The choir rehearses every Wednesday from 19.30 to 22.00 in Room 232 at the unit Culture. Every two months, Krashna gives a smallchamber music concert (free access). There, the members get the chance to let each other hear what their music has to offer, solo or in a small ensemble.
There are also annual chamber choir and chamber orchestra concerts for the experienced musicians and singers. The musical standards are set a little higher at these concerts.

Krashna is always looking for new faces. Want to know more? Visit http://www.krashna.nl

GROOVER

Student Jazz Society Groover in Delft is the only student jazz society in Europe. Groover was founded on November 21, 2006 and grew quickly into a fully-fledged association with over 180 members. Groover plays jazz and related styles as funk, latin, fusion and blues. This happens in various formations since Groover has a big band, jazz choir Vocalzz, soul band Capital S and different combos. The program includes regular workshops, master classes, jam sessions, weekends and jazz getaways. Groover is housed in the building at the Brabantse Turfmarkt 9. Here, the association has his own bar and stage. For more information, visit www.grooverjazz.nl. Keep an eye on the agenda of Culture!

APOLLO

The Apollo student orchestra is the symphony orchestra of the DSC (Delft Student Corps). Apollo is a fun orchestra to play in, but also highly proficient thanks to the exertions of the musicians and a skilled conductor.
Twice a year Apollo goes on a rehearsal weekend, when they stay in a group accommodation and rehearse intensively. Of course there’s also plenty of time to relax and socialise!
Apollo is a classical orchestra, however they are also open to other music styles. During the 32nd DSC lustrum, Apollo gave a sizzling concert in a metropole-style formation together with the rock singer Ellen ten Damme.
The annual solo music evening is in December. In May it’s time for the Phoenix Night of the Proms, an evening during which all the DSC music groups give performances until the early hours of the morning. Apollo stands for a fun atmosphere combined with beautiful music. If you play an instrument then Apollo is for you!

KATHARSIS

Katharsis is the drama society of the Sint Jansbrug student association.
Katharsis creates a new production every year, often with live music. The repertoire is highly divers, from classical to modern, and from Shakespeare to ‘Sloffen en Sletten’ (a play based on John Turturro’s film ‘Romance and Cigarettes’).
Together with a professional director, and sometimes a vocal coach, the Katharsis actors rehearse for their impressive performance in the Culture Centre’s big hall. But that’s not all. Katharsis has other projects too. In 2009 Katharsis gave a brilliant performance at the ‘Mooi Weer Spelen’, the cultural festival in the heart of Delft. There they involved passers-by in a special street theatre performance.
