Design and Optimization of 3D Skeletal Composite Structures

A method has been developed for designing composite 3D skeletal structures. This method can be used to design weight optimized fiber reinforced structures, which can carry complex loads in for example satellites or other high performance applications. This is done through size, shape and topology optimization using a ground structure approach as a starting point, which enables modelling of the highly anisotropic properties of fiber reinforced materials throughout the optimization process. Manufacturing constraints have been implemented at various stages in the optimization process. Several samples showcasing a joint design have been manufactured that form the building block for structures that can be designed using the methodology presented in this thesis.
